Down by the River

By midnightsongs

DOWN BY THE RIVER

I like to take me to the river
Loafing and idling time just watching it flow
I like to stray by the river all day long
Taking it easy, taking it slow

Down by, down by the river
Down by the river by the river all day

I’m gonna get myself together
Laid back mellow like a happy hippie in a dream
I’m gonna get me a rowing boat one day
Permanent fishing float on down stream

Down by, down by the river
Down by the river by the river all day

This crazy world rushes like water
Underneath the bridge
They tell me don’t you waste your time
But if there is no room for us to stop and stare
I tell you life ain’t worth a dime

About the song

The chorus was adapted from a banjo tune played by Phil. I then wrote a verse and middle eight for it.

The lyrics were inspired when driving around Milton Keynes on a Sunday afternoon and I noticed everybody else was driving like crazy. I though what is the hurry with these folk? So I wrote the above whimsy about someone who is thought to be a bit of an idler but really just likes to chill a little and take things easy while the rest of us have heart attacks.

This was premiered in the Vaults Bar, Stony Stratford in early 2005.
